Welcome to our new online Coaching Guide.  Our aim is to provide our coaches with information, techniques and skills to optimise the development of our young hockey players.

We have taken the best practices from around the world and adapted them for developing youngsters.  This guide provides tips, suggestions, video demonstrations and training plans for junior training sessions.

Obviously the skills and needs vary from player to player and age group to age group.  Over time we hope to refine this guide to provide more specific and tailored instructions for each age group.

Juniors 5-6

Generally girls and boys in Years 5 and 6 are just starting to learn the game of hockey.  In this age group we focus on teaching all the basic skills, introducing some basic team structures and simple tactics to help them on game day.

Juniors 7-8

In Years 7 and 8 players have usually grasped the basics are are keen to learn new skills.  In this age group we focus on fine-tuning the basic skills, introducing some "tricks" and understanding team structure/roles/tactics to help them on game day.

Juniors 9-10

In Years 9 and 10 kids both girls and boys are starting to move the ball quickly, shoot powerfully and take on players.  In this age group we focus on developing advanced skills and tactics.

Juniors 11-12

In Years 11 and 12 girls and boys are now young women and men and usually focused on competition and/or social interaction.  In this age group we focus on fitness and fine-tuning advanced skills and tactics.

    Here are some useful tips to consider before you begin coaching your team.  It is best to be prepared and to set some ground rules at the first training session.

  • Skills for Juniors   ( 7 Articles )

    A solid grounding in the basic skills of hockey is critical to young players.  In this section we show you how to teach the correct technique for some of the basic hockey skills, with key points, video examples and common mistakes.

  • Structure for Juniors   ( 2 Articles )

    As players develop, we can begin to teach them about player placement on the field.  This section provides a few different structures that may give your team an advantage over the opposition.

  • Strategy for Juniors   ( 9 Articles )

    Again, as players develop, we can make use of various strategy options and tactics to outwit the opposition. 

  • Training Sessions for Juniors   ( 2 Articles )

    It is a good idea to vary the make up of your training sessions to keep the players interested and developing.  This section provides a number of structured training sessions to use with your team.
